Preparations for Worship:
- Worship actively! Whether you are by yourself or with others, read the parts of the service aloud (responses, lessons, and prayers). Try singing along with the hymns as well.
- This service is for children too. Help them participate. Ask those who have that ability to read a prayer or lesson aloud. Take a moment to describe what’s happening. Ask questions. Encourage little ones to draw what they are hearing while you all listen. Unlike our more typical Sunday worship at church, you can pause at any time for discussion.
- Pause for a moment of quiet meditation. Then pray:
O Lord -- my Maker, Redeemer, and Comforter -- I come before you to hear your holy Word. Open my heart by your Holy Spirit that I may repent of my sins, believe in my risen Savior Jesus Christ, and grow day by day in grace and holiness. Hear me for your mercy’s sake. Amen.
INVOCATION & RESPONSES
In the name of the Father, and of the Son †, and of the Holy Spirit.
Christ is risen!
He is risen indeed! Alleluia!
CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION
We are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.
Christ died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. (2 Corinthians 5:14,15)
As we come into God’s presence, let us confess that often we have lived for ourselves, confident in the forgiveness of him who lived, died, and rose for us.
Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin.
For faithless worrying and selfish pride,
For sins of habit and sins of choice,
For the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do,
You should cast me away from your presence forever.
O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake.
If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.
But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
After his resurrection, Christ commanded his church to proclaim the forgiveness of sins to all nations, promising them that their words were as certain as his. Therefore it is by Christ’s command and with his authority that I say to you: In the name of Jesus your sins are forgiven.
Christ is risen!
He is risen indeed!
SONG – “This Joyful Eastertide”
1 This joyful Eastertide
Away with sin and sorrow!
My love, the Crucified,
Has sprung to life this morrow.
Had Christ, who once was slain,
Not burst his three-day prison,
Our faith had been in vain:
But now is Christ arisen, arisen, arisen;
But now is Christ arisen.
3 My flesh in hope shall rest
And for a season slumber
Till trump from east to west
Shall wake the dead in number.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
O God, you are the giver of everything good. Inspire us, your humble servants, to long for what is right and through your gracious guidance, to accomplish it to your glory; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
EPISTLE LESSON - 1 Peter 3:13-22
13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.” 15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 17 For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.
18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. 19 After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits— 20 to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.
GOSPEL OF THE DAY - John 14:15-21
15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”
SONG – “Immovable Our Hope Remains”
Immovable our hope remains
Though shifting sands before us lie
The One who washed away our stains
Shall bear us safely to the skies
The floods may rise, the winds may beat
Torrential rains descend
Yet God His own will not forget
He'll love and keep us till the end
You'll love and keep us till the end.
This is eternal life: to know
The living God and Christ, the Son
The Savior will not let us go
Until His saving work is done
Our debt was great, as was our need
But now the price is paid
Who can behold Immanuel bleed
And doubt His willingness to save?
We trust Your willingness to save.
The Lord acquits, who can condemn?
Though Satan's accusations fly
His pow'r can never reach our names
To blot them from the Book of Life
The Son has surely made us free
His Word forever stands
And all our joy is knowing we
Are graven on His wounded hands.
We're graven on Your wounded hands.
CONFESSION OF FAITH - The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
Offerings may be given on-line at LSavior.org/support, mailed to the church office, put into the offering plate if you come for private communion, or dropped off at the office during regular hours.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Almighty God and Father, when we see the depth of your love and hear your command to show the same to others, we confess that we have not measured up. Save us, Father, from our selfishness and impatience, from our arrogance and envy, and from our keeping score of the wrongs others have committed against us. Save us by your Holy Spirit through the assurances you’ve given to us at our baptism. Save us by connecting us to Jesus Christ and to his resurrection. Save us in keeping with your unfailing love, Father. Then help and strengthen us for showing love and doing good in every circumstance. Fill us with such hope in you and such love for all that other people will ask us to give the reason for this love and hope. Prepare us, Father, to answer their questions with gentleness and respect, giving all glory to your saving name.
Lord Jesus, from loving mother’s arms you have blessed each of us on our way through life. We thank you for that mother who first showed us what your unselfish and unwavering love looks like, feels like, and sounds like. Look with favor on every mother even as you looked with favor on your own mother. When any of these servants of yours become discouraged, sustain them your abiding presence. Give them joy in the opportunities they have had to honor you in their homes. Bless each of them with hope and faith.
Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our quiet petitions.
Heavenly Father, into your hands we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your unfailing love. Hear us now as we join in the prayer you taught your first disciples:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.
The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. (Numbers 6:24-26)
SONG – “Immovable Our Hope Remains”
Built into Christ, secure we stand
For with His Spirit we've been sealed
By grace we'll see the promised land
Where every sorrow shall be healed
To God who gave His only Son
To Jesus Christ, our Lord
To God the Spirit, Three-in-one
Be songs of praise forevermore
We'll sing Your praise forevermore.
