Sunday, May 17 - "The Hope of Easter Remains Despite Attempts to Dismiss It"
Easter 6 - May 17, 2020
The entire order of service is found in this video. If you prefer, you may follow along below.
You may also view this service on our Facebook page -https://www.facebook.com/LivingSaviorAsheville/
Preparations for Worship:
- Worship actively! Whether you are by yourself or with others, read the parts of the service aloud (responses, lessons, and prayers). Try singing along with the hymns as well.
- This service is for children too. Help them participate. Ask those who have that ability to read a prayer or lesson aloud. Take a moment to describe what’s happening. Ask questions. Encourage little ones to draw what they are hearing while you all listen. Unlike our more typical Sunday worship at church, you can pause at any time for discussion.
- Pause for a moment of quiet meditation. Then pray:
O Lord — my Maker, Redeemer, and Comforter — I come before you to hear your holy Word. Open my heart by your Holy Spirit that I may repent of my sins, believe in my risen Savior Jesus Christ, and grow day by day in grace and holiness. Hear me for your mercy’s sake. Amen.
INVOCATION & RESPONSES
In the name of the Father, and of the Son †, and of the Holy Spirit.
Christ is risen!
He is risen indeed! Alleluia!
CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION
We are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.
Christ died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
(2 Corinthians 5:14,15)
As we come into God’s presence, let us confess that often we have lived for ourselves, expressing our confidence in the gift of forgiveness from him who lived, died, and rose for us.
Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin.
For faithless worrying and selfish pride,
For sins of habit and sins of choice,
For the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do,
You should cast me away from your presence forever.
O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake.
If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.
But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
(1 Corinthians 15:17,20)
After his resurrection, Christ commanded his church to proclaim the forgiveness of sins to all nations, promising them that their words were as certain as his. Therefore it is by Christ’s command and with his authority that I say to you: In the name of Jesus your sins are forgiven.
Christ is risen!
He is risen indeed! Alleluia!
SONG - “Come People of the Risen King”
1 - Come, people of the risen King,
Who delight to bring Him praise.
Come, all and tune your hearts to sing
To the Morning Star of grace.
From the shifting shadows of the earth
We will lift our eyes to Him,
Where steady arms of mercy reach
To gather children in.
Refrain: Rejoice! Rejoice! Let every tongue rejoice!
One heart, one voice, O Church of Christ, rejoice!
2 - Come, those whose joy is morning sun
And those weeping through the night.
Come, those who tell of battles won,
And those struggling in the fight.
For His perfect love will never change,
And His mercies never cease,
But follow us through all our days
With the certain hope of peace.
3 - Come, young and old from every land,
Men and women of the faith.
Come, those with full or empty hands,
Find the riches of His grace.
Over all the world, His people sing,
Shore to shore we hear them call
The Truth that cries through every age;
‘Our God is all in all’.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
O God, you form the minds of your faithful people into a single will. Make us love what you command and desire what you promise, that among the many changes of this world, our hearts may ever yearn for the lasting joys of heaven; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
EPISTLE LESSON - 1 Peter 2:4-10
4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him— 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” 7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” 8 and, “A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.
9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
GOSPEL OF THE DAY - John 14:1-11
1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” 9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.”
SONG – “Immovable Our Hope Remains”
1 - Immovable our hope remains
Though shifting sands before us lie
The One who washed away our stains
Shall bear us safely to the skies
The floods may rise, the winds may beat
Torrential rains descend
Yet God His own will not forget
He'll love and keep us till the end.
You'll love and keep us till the end.
2 - This is eternal life: to know
The living God and Christ, the Son
The Savior will not let us go
Until His saving work is done
Our debt was great, as was our need
But now the price is paid
Who can behold Immanuel bleed
And doubt His willingness to save?
We trust Your willingness to save.
3- The Lord acquits, who can condemn?
Though Satan's accusations fly
His pow'r can never reach our names
To blot them from the Book of Life
The Son has surely made us free
His Word forever stands
And all our joy is knowing we
Are graven on His wounded hands.
We're graven on Your wounded hands.
CONFESSION OF FAITH - Nicene Creed
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Offerings may be given on-line at LSavior.org/support, mailed to the church office, put into the offering plate if you come for private communion, or dropped off at the office during regular hours.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Almighty God, you sent your Son to be the Way to heaven by his death and resurrection. Comfort and enliven us with Christ, the Truth, in your Word and Sacraments, that we might rejoice in him, our Life, both now and forevermore.
Almighty God, your Son honored you and became obedient even to death on the cross. Hear our prayers on behalf of children and young people. Provide them good and godly homes where they might be trained in your ways, and give them thankful hearts as they honor their fathers and mothers as your servants.
O Lord, as you remember us in our living and our dying, remember all those who cry to you in need. Grant healing to those who recover from surgeries, who battle illness, and who face death. Lead doctors, nurses, caretakers, and researchers to carry out their work with safety and renewed strength. Give them special insight and zeal as they seek to serve others.
In your mercy and according to your will, strengthen and deliver us and all for whom we pray, and grant each of us confidence in your faithfulness.
Most holy God, we give you thanks that you have called us out of darkness and into your marvelous light. Continue to enlighten us by your grace until we gather before your throne, through Jesus Christ, your Son, who has taught us to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all. (2 Corinthians 13:14)
SONG – “Immovable Our Hope Remains”
Built into Christ, secure we stand
For with His Spirit we've been sealed
By grace we'll see the promised land
Where every sorrow shall be healed
To God who gave His only Son
To Jesus Christ, our Lord
To God the Spirit, Three-in-one
Be songs of praise forevermore
We'll sing Your praise forevermore.
