"Confession better than catering"

 Preparations for Worship:

  • Find a place in your home where you can eliminate distractions. Put phones on silent and turn off the TV.

  • This order of service facilitates participation. If you are with others, we think you will get a lot more out of this service by reading the parts of this service aloud, the responses, lessons, and prayers.

  • Families with children, this service is for them too. Children learn best by imitating. Lead them in this service. Help them participate. Maybe they are old enough to read one of the prayers or lessons. Take a moment to describe what’s happening. See if they have any questions. Encourage them to draw what they are hearing while you all listen. Take advantage of the opportunities to pause and encourage questions and discussions more so than an average Sunday in church.

  • Load the YouTube video below and hit “pause” as soon as it starts. This will eliminate distracting ads when you get to that part of the service.

  • Load the devotional video so that it is ready to play when you get to that part of the service.

  • Pause for a moment in private prayer and quietness.

  • Afterwards pray the following prayer:
Heavenly Father, I have come to worship you. Draw near to me in your gracious Word, and assure me of your loving kindness. Curb my wandering thoughts, that with undivided attention I may hear your voice and speak your praise. Amen.

Opening Hymn - He Will Hold Me Fast

In the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit.

This is what the Lord says— “I am he who blots out your transgressions
and remembers your sins no more.” (Isaiah 43:25)

He does not stay angry forever but delights to show mercy. (Micah 7:18a)

He will have compassion on us and tread our sins underfoot.

He will hurl all our iniquities into the depth of the sea. (Micah 7:18-19)

Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we
may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. (Hebrews 4:16)

Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleans me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Hear the word of Christ through his called servant: I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer of the Day

God of all power and might, you are the giver of all that is good. Help us love you with all our heart, strengthen us in true faith, provide us with all we need, and keep us safe in your care; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

 EPISTLE LESSON - 1 Timothy 6:11-16

11 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you 14 to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.

Gospel of the day - Matthew 10:34-42

34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn

             ‘a man against his father,
              a daughter against her mother,
             a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—

36   a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’

37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.

40 “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”

Hymn of the Day - COME, FOLLOW ME

SERMON - Matthew 10:34-42

Confession of Faith - Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.

From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting.

Prayer of the church

Almighty and eternal God, you have demonstrated your grace and glory in Jesus Christ, who remains our steadfast hope and enduring comfort. Bless your church wherever your people gather in the Savior’s name. Defend us against our spiritual enemies, help us persevere in faith, and move us to bring salvation to people everywhere.

Heavenly Father, your Holy Spirit encourages your family of believers with an eternal, unchanging gospel.  Lift up all who serve in your name, including parents, pastors, teachers of the Word, and all who function as our leaders.  Keep them in health and safety for the good of the church.  Help each of us to do faithfully the work to which you have called us.

Lord God, graciously direct those who have been set in positions of authority in our community, state, and nation. Let people everywhere enjoy justice, peace, freedom, and a share in the goodness of your creation.

Almighty and eternal God, you give strength to the weary and new courage to those who may lose heart.  Hear us as we pray for those whose confidence in you is being put to the test.

Special intercessions

Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our quiet petitions.

Silent prayer

Eternal God, in your mercy hear the prayers of all who call on you in any trouble, that they may have the joy of receiving your help in their need. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord, in whose name we join in the prayer he taught his first disciples:

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power

and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Lord’s Blessing

The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The Lord look on you with favor and give † you peace. (Numbers 6:24-26)
