Preparations for Worship:

  • Find a place in your home where you can eliminate distractions. Put phones on silent and turn off the TV.
  • This order of service facilitates participation. If you are with others, we think you will get a lot more out of this service by reading the parts of this service aloud, the responses, lessons, and prayers.
  • Families with children, this service is for them too. Children learn best by imitating. Lead them in this service. Help them participate. Maybe they are old enough to read one of the prayers or lessons. Take a moment to describe what’s happening. See if they have any questions. Encourage them to draw what they are hearing while you all listen. Take advantage of the opportunities to pause and encourage questions and discussions more so than an average Sunday in church.
  • Load the YouTube video below and hit “pause” as soon as it starts. This will eliminate distracting ads when you get to that part of the service.
  • Load the devotional video so that it is ready to play when you get to that part of the service.
  • Pause for a moment in private prayer and quietness.
  • Afterwards pray the following prayer:
Heavenly Father, I have come to worship you. Draw near to me in your gracious Word, and assure me of your loving kindness. Curb my wandering thoughts, that with undivided attention I may hear your voice and speak your praise. Amen.

Opening Hymn - God's Own Child, I Gladly Say It

In the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit.

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you:

God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness,

we lie and do not live by the truth.

If we claim to be without sin,

we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. (1 John 1:5-8)

Let us confess our sins.

Father, I have sinned against you and am no longer worthy to be called your child.
Yet in mercy you sacrificed your only Son to wash away all my guilt.
For his sake, O God, be merciful to me, a sinner,
and let me serve you in the joy of the Holy Spirit.

If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins
and purify us from all unrighteousness.   1 John 1:9

Upon this, your confession, I say to you what God says:
Your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer of the Day

O God, you reveal your mighty power chiefly in showing mercy and kindness. Grant us the full measure of your grace that we may obtain your promises and become partakers of your heavenly glory; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

EPISTLE LESSON - 1 Timothy 6:17-21

17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

20 Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, 21 which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith.

Grace be with you all.

GOSPEL - Matthew 13: 44-52

44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.

45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.

47 “Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. 49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous 50 and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

51 “Have you understood all these things?” Jesus asked.

“Yes,” they replied.

52 He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”

SERMON - Matthew 13:44-52

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
  born of the virgin Mary,
  suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
  He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.

O Lord, we are your people, chosen by your grace to be your own possession and granted mercy upon mercy. Hear us in our time of need and answer our prayers according to your will. Lead us to always see your gospel and your kingdom as our greatest treasure and to urgently share the riches of your grace with those who are lost in the bankruptcy of life in this world. Bless the work of pastors, missionaries, teachers and evangelists everywhere. Remind all of us as that we your Church, a kingdom of priests called out of darkness and into your marvelous light so that we may declare you praises to those who do not know your saving mercy. Remove the obstacles that exist inside of us: fear, timidity, doubts, and laziness. Erase the obstacles that exist outside of us: the attacks of the devil, the voices of unbelievers, and the deafness and dismissiveness of our hearers. Embolden us trust in the power of the Spirit and enliven our joy in your grace to us and for all.

Lord of all creation, bless our nation and those who govern us, and that we may use the gift of freedom to live holy, upright and godly lives, to the praise of your glory. Bring safety and success to all lawful occupations and professions and encourage our society to pursue honesty and virtue in all things.

Special prayers & private petitions

Holy God, mighty Lord, endless is your mercy and eternal your reign. Hear the prayers of your people who come to you with every need, including the prayer your Son has taught us to pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Lord’s Blessing

The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The Lord look on you with favor and give † you peace. (Numbers 6:24-26)
